Getting To Know My Characters <3

For me, writing is all about the characters. I love them. Even the minor ones! I have to be careful that I actually write enough about them in their stories. They will often do something and since I know all their back story, I’ll forget to explain why they did it because to me it’s so obvious!

I’m a very visual person, so the way I get to know my characters from the start is with pictures. I have multiple public and private boards on Pinterest that are super helpful!! I get tons of inspiration from there! Even just a simple picture in a magazine or advertisement can set my mind whirling into a story!

I also like to sketch my characters out as I try to get a feel for them. I actually can’t draw more than a cartoonish looking stick figure but it’s still fun to try. 🙂

These guys are from the school story I’ve dreamed up! I haven’t started writing it yet but that’s because I’m saving it for NaNoWriMo this year!! Still working on the plot and LOVE the characters!!

These guys are from my favorite story (shhh! don’t tell the others!).  I’ve been calling it my ‘cousins’ story till I decide on a name. 😉 I’ve got a good little bit written out for this one and am so excited to finish it!

And of course these are from my novel ‘The Star Under The City’. I love the plot, adore these characters and cried far too many times while writing this story. 😉 I can’t wait for you to get to know them too!

There will be more info on all these stories soon!! I’m excited! I’d say check out my Pinterest boards for them. It’s a quick way to really get a feel for each little world!

Also feel free to check out my my ‘Story Characters‘ inspiration board and my ‘My Characters‘ board. 🙂

How do you guys get inspiration for your characters?

Happy creating!!

  1. I love to draw my characters too!!! It’s so great to get to actually see them after only knowing them in my head for so long.
Eeeeek!! Your drawing style is so perfect!! Each one has so much character in the way they stand and the look on their face! ❤ Keep sketching, Jo!
